Companies: Lead-free assurances from Chinese suppliers don't stand up - Associated Press

CAPITOL HILL (AP) - Companies behind recent recalls of toys and jewelry have told Congress that claims from Chinese suppliers that the products were virtually lead-free did not stand up to scrutiny.

Many said that their suppliers had signed agreements saying they would comply with U.S. standards for lead content. Some even provided copies of lab results.

An official of 1 Arizona company, though, said in a letter that his firm bought a home lead-testing kit at a hardware store to do its own tests on the 25-cent jewelry it sells. The jewelry failed the tests, and the company later recalled about 123,000 pieces.

Consumer Product Safety Commission tests of another company's toy jewelry found lead levels as high as 96% by weight.

A House subcommittee is planning two days of hearings beginning tomorrow on this year's recalls of millions of toys and other children's products. The committee has made inquiries of 19 companies.

These US companies need to test the trinkets and jewelry PRIOR to selling it to consumers. This way they don't poison children and have to do a recall. How ridiculous this whole thing is. The lead test kit costs $3.00. A recall must cost hundreds of thousands, not to mention the bad name they get from this.

My company sells lead free children's jewelry, and it is made in the USA. Our children are worth the few extra dollars you will spend on safe jewelry.

Americans need to stand up and tell China and US companies that we won't take this anymore. It is a human rights violation at this point. Our children have the right to be safe, and not be poisoned.

I am mad as hell about this situation. I have done something about it. Please, parent, stop buying Chinese trinkets and junk jewelry.

Great point of view. Americans need to get MAD as HELL and STOP supporting the Chinese. Ater all, we get up in the morning and turn off our alarm clock made in Taiwan, then we go to our coffee pots made in China, then we shave with our razor made in China, and get dressed in our clothes made in Indonesia or Sri Lanks, brush our teeth with Dollar Store Toothpaste from China that has Anti-Freeze in it, and we drive our Toyota or Hyundai, or Nissan, to work, and our company imports products from Taiwan and China. Then we go Christmas shopping and buy toys from MAttel, and other companies made in China and Taiwan.

We poison our dogs with pet food made from China, our children get mental delays and illness from lead tainted jewelry and toys....hmmmm..what the hell is WRONG WITH US......this is our doing. Just say no America....NO TO CHINESE IMPORTS!!!!!!!
