Barnett Helzberg Jr., former chairman of Helzberg Diamonds, said his father taught him to control the inner space in his brain rather than complain about unfairness in the world.

"Never be a victim," Helzberg said. There is always something negative to dwell on, he said. Instead, focus on what you can accomplish.

"Think about what you control," Helzberg said. "Focus on what you can do. Don't waste your time on what you can't do." Helzberg spoke Wednesday at Washburn University as part of the 2007 Irv and Peggy Sheffel Lecture Series, presented by the Brewster Place Foundation and the Washburn University School of Business.
