Jessica Mathew comes from a family of jewelers. Mathew Jewelers on Main Street in Zelienople was founded by her great-grandfather, and now it's her father's business.

Still, when Ms. Mathew, 18, decided to create a ring last year during her senior year of high school, her bloodline was not enough to guarantee she'd be successful. "It was the first time I ever tried making anything like that," she said. Maybe it was beginner's luck that earned her an award for her design.
