Here’s a question for the fashion lovers in the audience: What do Raquel Welch, the duchess of Windsor, Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Paris Hilton have in common? Answer: All have happily worn baubles and bangles created by costume jewelry designer Kenneth Jay Lane.

Why would women who could easily afford real jewels wear fakes instead? Lane, who’s still going strong at age 75 and whose glittering career is the focus of an exhibit opening Friday at the RISD Museum, says the reason is simple. When it comes to jewelry, girls just want to have fun.
