Myanmar gem ban advances - By Sylvia A. Smith
The House is considering a ban on rubies, jade and other gems mined in Myanmar from entering the U.S. even if they are first exported to other countries where they are set in rings, bracelets and other jewelry.
Legislation to tighten sanctions on the military regime was approved Tuesday by the Foreign Affairs Committee and will be sent to other committees before the full House votes.
The ban would apply to rough gemstones or any jewelry that includes a gem that came from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. About 90 percent of the world’s rubies come from Myanmar.
