JA asks Congress to support sales tax changes

Jewelers of America (JA) has signed and endorsed a letter asking members of Congress to pass the Sales Tax Fairness and Simplification Act.

The act, introduced in the Senate by Republican Sen. Mike Enzi of Wyoming, would permit states to require that remote retailers collect and remit sales and use taxes on catalog and Internet purchases.

The bill is designed to ensure remote retailers, such as Web sites, have to charge state and local taxes, just like retail stores do.
