Safety Issues have Some Jewelers Pulling Blue Toopaz from Cases...By Rory Sweeney
If jewelry’s on the Christmas gift list, make sure it won’t cause more than the recipient’s face to glow. Earlier this year, federal officials began investigating a lapse in regulations that allowed irradiated gemstones, particularly blue topazes, to be sold without being tested for radioactivity by a licensed distributor.
Some retailers have stopped selling the stones until the issue is resolved, but officials and many in the industry say it’s not a big deal. The process is “decades old,” according to a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission representative, and no one has ever reported being harmed by the stones.
