Jeweler loses snowfall bet; customers win

Nearly 400 Blue Water Area residents greeted the first snowfall of 2008 with open arms and open wallets. That's because a long-standing holiday promotion at Alexander's Fine Jewelers in Port Huron finally is paying out. For about a decade, the staff at the Huron Avenue business has been offering customers who buy jewelry between the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve a refund if a certain amount of snowfall is recorded on a certain day.

This year, the refund was contingent on at least 5 inches of snow blanketing Port Huron on New Year's Day. And for the first time, the jewelry store lost the bet.
