Metal's rise affects jewelry, starts mining talk - John Holland

Got a sack of gold pieces under the mattress? You're in luck. You can sell them for a high price these days. Got a sweetheart you'd like to marry? You might pay more than you planned for a gold engagement ring. The metal hit an all-time high of $924.50 an ounce Jan. 29 and closed at $919.20 on the London market Friday. The price is up 40 percent from a year ago and more than triple what it was in 2001.
