Hitler's Gold - Really?
It has been reported (all over the news) that a member of Germany's Parliament is searching for what has been dubbed Hitler's Gold. They had to stop digging due to safety concerns. However, the treasure hunters resumed digging for Hitler's gold. The motivation for the dig? Two tons of gold socked away by Hitler. It's also possible that the Amber Room constructed of gold and amber (belonging to the Russians), might also be found. Heinz Peter Haustein is the brains behind the search for Hitler's gold (if one could consider such a "find" a treasure). Heinz is also a member of Germany's Parliament and is already setting the stage for the age old argument of "finder's keeper's."
If he finds the Amber Room, he states he will recommend that whatever bits and pieces of the Amber Room are found should be returned to Russia. However, his treasure seeking partner Hanisch states; that if they find two tons of Hitler's gold, the "find" is not subject to the customary 10% reward. In fact, Heinz has stated that the gold legally belongs to Germany. Really?
Just where did this gold from? No doubt, Hitler ordered that the gold be moved during World War II. Not only did the Nazi's run off with the gold but, they also ran off with art and silver when they realized that they were losing the war. The father of Hanisch was a navigator in the Luftwaffe (the Nazi air force) and he was one of the troops who assisted the Nazi's in hiding the gold, silver and art.
I think these two fellows are need of a reality check as if the gold, art, silver and bits and pieces of the Amber Room were hidden by the Nazi's, then it stands to reason these possessions do NOT belong to Germany.
Are they forgetting about the millions of men, women and children who were murdered and tortured by the Nazi's during World War II? They call this "dig" the hunt for Hitler's gold. The operative words in this treasure-hunting escapade are "Hitler" and "Nazi". I can go as far to speculate that whatever 6 million innocent people were forced to leave behind was summarily converted into vast forms of wealth. This ill-gotten "wealth" is what powered the Nazi war machine.
If Heinz and Hanisch just happen to find their "treasure" after a twelve-year search, they should NOT be rewarded nor, honored in any way. Yes, treasure hunters seek out treasures to uncover a mystery and/or fill in the gaps of history, however, there is no mystery as to how this treasure was amassed, who amassed it (Hitler's Germany), who hid it (the Nazi's) and who's looking for it (the son of a Nazi navigator).
