March 'difficult for retailers'

U.S. chain store sales fell slightly in March, decreasing 0.5 percent compared with the same period last year, according to the latest study by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). Consumer worries about the slowing economy coupled with the Easter holiday falling in March rather than in April this year, creating one less shopping day during the month, posed "difficulties for retailers," according to ICSC Chief Economist and Director of Research Michael Niemira.
